the family journal

We’ve been on the road for a while now, and we’ve seen quite a bit. We haven’t yet scratched the surface of what is out there though, so we keep exploring. Sometimes we can’t sit still, sometimes we don’t want to move. Sometimes we cover 1000 miles in a month, sometimes barely 50. But we are moving and we are exploring, one mile at a time.

Joshua Tree National Park, CA

[easy-image-collage id=2887] We’ve spent some time at Joshua Tree two years ago, still with Betty and fairly new to this whole traveling/boondocking/meeting friends on the road thing. It was still one of the most epic groups/camping experience we had so far and we were not expecting this trip to top the experience on that dry lake...

Lake Mead National Recreation Area

[easy-image-collage id=2918] Some words ahead: Do not do the math and add together how long we’ve been here vs. the stay limit. Just so we’re on the same page. Lake Mead was the perfect place to get some furniture built, spent Christmas and New Years and build some more. [easy-image-collage id=2925] We pulled in with the Bend cold...

What the hell are we doing?

[easy-image-collage id=2689] Wait, weren’t we supposed to settle down in Idaho?! Well, nobody said we’re people who stick to plans. Quite the opposite actually. ( I just realized I never actually blogged about that whole North Idaho Homestead Winter Experience Extravaganza. Maybe later) And so we are resuscit...

Wyoming (Yellowstone National Park)

[easy-image-collage id=2619] Yellowstone should have made it easy to be liked. We should’ve have been in awe, mesmerized and unwilling to leave. Instead we left after mere 48 hours without the feeling to have missed out on anything. Without even visiting the southern part of the park, where Old Faithful and the Grand Prisma...

Camping inception

[easy-image-collage id=2479] Since we’re camping fulltime, going on a camping trip is somewhat weird. You’re feeling like you know what you’re doing, but you’re don’t. And it is super weird to go to a campground without your house. [easy-image-collage id=2480] We were tired of the crowds of tourists. And we had a bad da...

Montana (Whitefish, Glacier National Park)

[easy-image-collage id=2510] Another state we had high hopes in and were sobered up (status before heading to the south-east part). We stayed in Missoula for a night, and then in Kalispell for another to check out Whitefish. That little town seems like a facade fairyland between trailer parks and Walmart. I don’t say that this is ...

Idaho (Sandpoint, Moscow)

[easy-image-collage id=2489] [easy-image-collage id=2414] We had high hopes in Washington, expected a slightly colder Oregon maybe? But it didn’t click at all, It is not a place I could imagine us anytime soon. Even after passing the mountains and finding ourselves in the rolling hills of the Columbia River Gorge. We may have spen...

Washington (Seattle, Olympic National Park)

[easy-image-collage id=2503] After our longer-than-planned stop in southern California we pretty much sped up the coast to get to Washington and pick up our visitors. We made way more miles than normally and it felt rushed but also liberating. We were free to move at last! We stopped at Lake Shastina for a little over a week, and th...

The year of the mechanical breakdowns

We would've thought our budget for mechanical repairs was exhausted for this year. I mean, with a new rear axle and getting the new trailer and car ready. And we did have some fun, finally being able to leave Yuma, AZ and heading up the US395 into the southern part of the eastern Sierra Nevadas. We made the trip to Death Valley Nation...

Death Valley aka Photodump

I wasn’t so sure what to think about Death Valley before heading there. You kinda get the feeling that every inch  had been photographed a million times, which gives you the false impression of already knowing that place before actually heading there. We decided not to take the trailer since the road going in from the west is na...
